2008 CP Premier Basketball League

A Night of Comebacks

The AA League got out to an impressive start last week as the defending champion 12 Baskets came back from a 38-27 deficit to defeat a much improved Edmonds YL team.  12 Basket's were missing Andy Shores (pictured) and still managed to win their opening game.
Another impressive win on opening night was by CPYS.  The crafty vets came back from a 19-7 deficit to win 54-40 based on the 20 of 29 shooting from the free throw line.  How many free throws did Edmonds YL get? Six, yep 2-6 for the entire game.  How do we know this you might ask?

CCF wins big!

CCF came into this year determined to improve from last year's winless debut season of 0-7 in which their closest loss was an 18 point defeat to Chosen Few.  After thinking long and hard, CCF coach Kyle Eisen agreed to drop from the AA League to the A League and what a great move it turned out to be.
CCF's first challenge was a highly touted SEED team that was confident in their chance at a championship run.  That confidence quickly faded as CCF stormed out to a 55-30 point lead.  CCF coach Kyle Eisen led the way with 21 points while Pat Sullivan chipped in 18 points.

Kings of the Eastside

After trailing 16-3, DJ Vick's Eastside 4sq defeated the Eastside Ballers for Eastside bragging rights and a 2-0 record keeping pace with the defending champion Bellevue Christian.

"Heart man, heart!" Eastside 4sq coach DJ Vick shouted as he made two of his 18 points in an impressive come from behind win over the West Division leading Eastside Ballers.  Vick did some tinkering with his squad this year and has a team that may challenge Bellevue Christian to something more than just a division title.
4sq's big man JD Huleen went 4-4 behind the three point line scoring 22 points along with Eddie Coulson's 22.  David Rengo led the Ballers with 28 in a losing cause.
Meanwhile, Bellevue Christian keeps on winning dismantling the Free Agents 89-60.  The Bulls bounced back from a bitter opening day loss to defeat the Sno Dawgs 70-59.

Finally coming together
Starting 0-2 this year didn't concern Young Life (YL) coach John Heywood.  He knew a trimmed down '08 team would take some time to adjust.  Their first two losses came by not finishing strong and both losses were under 10 points.  In last week's game against CPYS, Young Life came out on fire and made sure former two time MVP Ryan Wilkerson wouldn't make it a game holding him to a measly 10 points.
Only three teams in the AA League can boast four starters averaging double digits and YL is one of them. If they play with the same passion and energy they did against CPYS, the rest of the AA League should take note.
Agent Zero took down the last unbeaten team and former champs, 12 Baskets with an impressive 'off the bench' performance by the Johnson brothers.  Seth and Philip Johnson combined for 29 of the overall 53 points helping 'Zero cling to their playoff lives.

Champs bounce back
After a disappointing opening day loss to the Sabers the defending A League champs have won three in a row and now sit atop the A League with a 3-1 record.
Dirk Sniel of the 'Players leads the league with a 27 ppg average and has made 16/29 field goals (55.2%) and an incredible 13/24 from behind the 3-point line (54.2%).  The 'Players will play an improved Team Jungle squad next week that is looking to avenge a week two loss.
In the AA League, 12 Baskets rebounded from last week's loss improving to 4-1 with a win over an injury riddled Eastside Thunder.
Eastside 4sq of the AAA League is now the only unbeaten team in CP Premier Basketball League at 4-0.  They'll have a tough task when they go up against their division rival, Eastside Ballers.  The Ballers haven't lost all year except for their defeat to 4sq.  This rematch will be a fun one to watch.

A black and white game
Two weeks ago an official heckled a player after the player made a comment about his officiating.
"Learn how to shoot a layup before talking to me," was the alleged complaint that was forwarded to the corporate office of the PNBOA.
This week an official gave a technical to a player that looked at him the wrong way. On Monday night, one of the games started out with one team having nine team fouls while the other team had one.
The zebras have a tough task ahead of them: Officiate grown men that may whine over a call or two. Some officials will hold a grudge for that particular player; they can't help it, it's human nature. All officials, and I repeat, all officials do not care about the outcome of the game. Most of them do it for the love of the game, some do it for the money. You can see those officials that do it for the money. They are the ones that may lean on the wall as they officiate. Or let players hack at themselves when the game is out of reach.
From my personal experience (13 years to be exact) I have noticed that champions don't pay any attention to officials. To a champion an official is irrelevant. A champion plays through the bad calls, and may even nod his head in respect to an official after the call is made. Another thing that I have noted in my 13 years of running sports leagues is I have never seen a bad call cost a team a title, or even a game.
As my son grows into a toddler, kid, teen ager and eventually an adult. I will always remind him that sports are a lot like life. People cheat, it isn't fair, and calls will go against him. But in the end, if he plays his game and fulfills his role on the team, he will always be a champion. Play through fellas, play through.

C U L A T R
"Fifteen points?" A LATR team member asked, "I mean, where is the love?" he continued.  What the LATR team member was commenting about was the prediction that they would lose to the defending champion 12 Baskets team by, well, 15 points.
That inspired LATR enough to capture a lead early and upset the defending champs defeating them 77-63, one point shy of, you guessed it, 15 points.  LATR's J. Prohn led all scorers with 36 points including 13 of 14 from the free throw line.
In the AAA League, Eastside 4sq won their first championship defeating a depleted Eastside Ballers team 72-64.  The Ballers were without two of their key players, Derek Miller (16.8 ppg average) and Chris Norman (10.7 ppg average).
The Sabers captured their first A League title and third title overall.  It was their league leading sixth championship game in which they owned from the beginning.  Some thought the younger legs of SEED would outrun the former champs but experience proved too much and SEED never rebounded from an early deficit
