CP Premier Flag Football League

Week 1photos

Business as usual for the champs

Of all the games in the opening week of the 2007 the defending champs, Arsenal, were the only ones to win with a margin larger then five.  If was their tenth CP Premier League win in a row and their 18 win in a row overall.  Next week the champs will visit what looks like an improved Antioch team.

Picture this, Young Life is leading Mean Machine 18-14 with 60 seconds remaining in the game.  It was first and goal on the half yard line and it looked like Young Life would start the season better than last year.
The next play was an option to the right side, Young Life QB Braden Richey pitched the ball to his running back who dropped the ball which bounced into the hands of the defense who then ran 95 yards for what would have been a 20-18 Mean Machine lead.  The problem?  As the ball hit the ground the head official blew it dead thinking it was the 7 on 7 CPFFL rules of no fumbles.
"It was clearly my error," the head official said, "I called the play dead and blew my whistle when I shouldn't have."
That was the second time a play was blown dead before the play ended.  Earlier in the game, Young Life muffed a punt and recovered it by touching the ball dead, instead of securing it properly.  "We try to protect our players," one official said, "clearly we will have to do a better job of letting the players decide the play on the field."
Controversy has always been a part of the CP Premier
League, controversy that league vet, Mike Harris has seen plenty of.  "Hey, bottom line we had 52 seconds to score the winning TD" Harris said, "we didn't get it done.  I'm tired of losing, we'll get it right next week."  Harris was the most sought after Free Agent in the off season.  Entertaining offers from the 7 on 7 summer champion Replacementz, the Patriots and (believe it or not) the returning Premier champs, Arsenal.  How did Arsenal do with the talent of Mike Harris?  Just fine.
Arsenal started the season off playing a familiar foe, Eastside Thunder who is now coached by Matthew Boyle of the famed Eastside Thunder basketball team.  Thunder did  show up to play and played closer than the 25-7 score but couldn't keep up with a well practiced team.
Arsenal is stacked with an offensive until held together by last year's Offensive player of the Year, Noah Roehl.  Their defensive is ran by coach and Defensive player of the year, Brian Anderson, both units are well oiled machines that are primed for another championship run.
In other games, Canyon Creek came back with a vengeance (and very pretty uniforms I might add) and upset the summer 7 on 7 league champion Replacementz 13-12.  The Replacementz, didn't go down without a fight, scoring once out of a record low two plays in the first half.
Antioch is now the Antioch Saints, combining with a Sunday Metro League team, the most storied franchise in the CP Premier Flag Football League knew a change had to be made in order to be competitive.  With all the changes made, one change was not - Dan Taylor returned for another year and mastered a drive in the second half that took over 12 minutes off the clock and ensured a victory over the Patriots, 12-7.
Someone must have tipped off Team Mother that they were playing the high powered Double Shot team that is ranked #2 because not one, I repeat, not one player from the team showed up.  League officials have been notified by Team Mother that they still want to play however need to retool their team with committed players.
